To raise your own Monarch Butterflies look on the bottoms of milkweed plants in late July or August.
The butterfly eggs will appear as small white specks resembling sand or a tiny grain of rice.
Place the leaf in a dark shoe box and check for progress daily. The tiny caterpillars will soon appear and you can
find them by looking for the "trail" they leave as they eat the leaf.
Watch as they grow rapidly and make sure you have plenty
of fresh milkweed leaves for them to feed on.
The caterpillars will grow to about one and a half to two inches before they spin a cocoon.
Again watch for activity. In time they will emerge as new butterflies.
However we think you might do well to rethink releasing butterflies at your event.
We offer our butterfly wedding favors as an alternative to live butterfly releases.
In recent years butterfly releases have become somewhat popular and at first glance it is easy to see why.
The big drawback is that butterflies are more delicate than we might think.
One bride related a story to us about a lavish wedding abord a luxury yachat.
The bride and groom had planned a live butterfly release but for one reason or another the ceromony was delied until almost night
and when the butterflies were released in the cool air they simply dropped to the deck, to be crushed under foot.
What was ment to be a lovely event turned grim.
Instead why not give our butterfly ornaments or wind chimes as favors.
